This 250 page book, with its 136 high quality black and white photographs, maps and illustrations plus 16 colour plates, is the story of the Mattimoe family who left Ireland in the 1860’s and settled in Co. Durham. It covers the history of the Mattimoes in Ireland as well as the history of Connaught and Moylurg, the land of the Mattimoes. It delves into Ireland’s past to understand the causes of the poverty and injustice which led the family to leave the country of their birth. It follows them as the family settled in the coal-mining hamlet of Ramshaw and grew into a close, generous-hearted and public-spirited Catholic family, detailing those local, national and, on occasions, world events which touched their lives. The way of life and the industry which supported it are now gone but the memories of the family, their happy moments and personal tragedies are preserved in this book.
